Choosing the right real estate agent can be a confusing process. To help ease the process, we’ve answered some common questions sellers have when making this decision.  Hopefully, we can help you find the right agent for you!

Choose the Right Real Estate Agent For You

Choosing to sell your home can be overwhelming. You probably have many questions and don’t know where to begin.

A real estate agent is meant to be your support during this time.  The right agent will be able to answer all of your questions, and help you sell your home in a timely manner while extracting the maximum value.

So how do you know which real estate agent is right for you?  Choosing an agent can be a confusing process. Below, we’ve answered some common questions sellers have when making this decision.  Hopefully, we can help make this process easier for you!

Question 1:  Why Do I Need a Real Estate Agent

Many people wonder why it is so necessary to sell a home through a real estate agent. Perhaps, you are wondering that right now.

The thought of selling your home without a real estate agent may seem like an attractive option since you won’t have to worry about paying commission.

However, the value that a real estate agent adds in your favor is well worth any commission, which is only a tiny fraction of the selling price.

Selling your home through a real estate agent is the right choice because:

  1. Your agent will be your advocate.  Your real estate agent is going to be your source of knowledge, support, and reassurance throughout the entire process of selling your home.
  2. They will set the price right. Setting your asking price right the first time is important to making the best sale.
  3. They will negotiate in your favor. A good agent will negotiate the terms of the sale in your favor as much as possible. He or she will represent you throughout the process and keep the transaction on schedule.
  4. Your questions will be answered.  Real estate agents are there to answer any questions you have along the way. There is so much information that goes into the sale of a home, and having that source of expert knowledge will make the process millions of times easier.

Question 2:  Where Do I Find Real Estate Agents?

Finding a good real estate agent doesn’t have to be difficult. Many agents get business from word of mouth and referrals. You can ask others who have recently bought or sold a home which agent helped with the transaction.

You can also perform an online search for agents in your area. The added advantage of an online search is the visibility of reviews. You can easily read through what others had experienced working with the agent.

Another way to find an agent is by driving around your neighborhood and looking for agent signs in front of homes for sale. Attending open houses is also a great way to meet agents and determine if they are a good fit for you.

Question 3: What Should I Ask During an Interview with the Agent?

Experience matters in the real estate industry.

You’ll want to ask the agent how long they’ve been in real estate. This is not to say that a newly licensed agent isn’t valuable. But, the more experience one has in this industry, the more confidence you will have that your transaction will be successful.

Next, you should ask for references. A successful agent should be able to provide a few references with little trouble.

Finally, ask the agent what sets them apart from the competition. You want to know why you should choose them and not a competitor down the street. There are many questions you can ask during an interview and the previously mentioned are just a few of the important ones.

Question 4:  What If I Want to Switch Agents?

Sometimes, things just don’t work out. It isn’t necessarily anyone’s fault. Unfortunately, this can happen with your real estate agent.

You must remember that selling your home is a big step. Therefore, you must be comfortable with the agent who is representing you. If you’re not, then it’s time to move on.

It’s best to understand the exit procedure before you begin working with an agent. So, make that a question during your initial meeting. Then, if something happens that makes you want to switch agents, be honest and upfront with your current agent before moving on to a new one.

Question 5:  Should I Hire a Friend or Family Member?

Generally, it’s not a good idea to do business with friends and family when it comes to real estate. You may feel obligated to go to a friend or family member when selling your home if they are qualified.

However, it’s not a good idea for several reasons. Those individuals with whom you have a casual or personal relationship may not take you seriously. You might get stuck selling your own home while they focus on other clients.

The worst-case scenario, however, could be that you and your friend or family member have a disagreement. This can lead to hard feelings and even worse, lost relationships. It simply is not worth risking your personal relationships to enter into a business transaction such as selling your home.

The importance of finding a good real estate agent to sell your home cannot be stressed enough. This person is going to be representing you throughout the process. Therefore, choose someone who will represent you and negotiate favorably on your behalf.
